Big roster moves ahead for the Edmonton Oilers following John Klingberg acquisition
It was recently announced that the Edmonton Oilers signed defenceman John Klingberg to 1 year pro-rated contract worth $1 million, including a $350k signing bonus. Although the signing has sparked a ton of excitement, the Edmonton Oilers are well over the salary cap, and Stan Bowman will need to make some substantial adjustments to his roster.
Additionally, before the Klingberg signing, the Edmonton Oilers already had a 23 man roster, therefore, Bowman will need to place a player on the waiver wire before it's official.
According to Liam McCormick of
Oilers Daily, The signing of Klingberg put the Oilers at 24 contract slots, one over the maximum of 23. The easiest decision here will be to waive defenceman
Josh Brown, but the team will likely have another roster move coming as well.
The Oilers want to accrue as much cap space as possible. According to PuckPedia, if Edmonton remains over the cap and in their LTIR spending, Klingberg's cap hit will actually cost the team more.
Oilers expected to place Josh Brown on waivers
Josh Brown was arguably one of the more controversial signings by the Edmonton Oilers over the summer. The team signed Brown to a 3 year deal worth $1 MM AAV per season, a huge overpayment to say the least.
The Oilers took a big gamble on bringing big Josh Brown, who's 6'5 frame was meant to replace the departed
Vincent Desharnais. With that being said, Josh Brown has performed so badly, GM Stan Bowman's hand was forced to seek external help.
With Klingberg now in the mix, the Oilers roster is overcrowded and over budget.
The Oilers are in the home stretch of evaluating all options for their team before making an impact trade at this year's deadline. However, this would be a very hard decision to send down three players for cap space. It's possible only one or two is sent down.
As it stands, fans can expect Josh Brown to hit the waiver wire at any given moment.
