Brandon Hagel reveals how Matthew Tkachuk set him off
Team Canada is coming off a disappointing 3-1 loss to Team USA at the 4 Nations Face-Off Tournament, but fans around the league are still riding a high after watching one of the most electrifying 1st period of hockey international hockey has ever seen.
3 fights in 10 minutes -- just take that in for a moment.
According to Liam McCormick of Oilers Daily,
Matthew Tkachuk and
Brandon Hagel have an existing rivalry on their respective NHL teams, the Panthers and Lightning, and they continued that same rivalry in the opening period between Team USA and Canada.
In an intermission interview, Hagel revealed that Tkachuk challenged him in warmups.
Yeah, I Think I blacked out. I think, just trying to get something energy in the building. He asked, and I'm not backing down from him.
- Brandon Hagel
Matthew Tkachuk has always been known to be one of the biggest villains in the NHL, but this time, he took things to a new level.
With all the political tension between Canada and the USA, Matthew Tkachuk decided to exploit that tension by making a calculated attack on Brandon Hagel.
While the fight may have been a draw, team USA ultimately got the last laugh as they scored 3 unanswered goals to defeat the Canadians.
"Really high [quality], obviously," McDavid said of Saturday's contest. "As I said the other night, there's a lot of great players out there. It was fast again, tight-checking, competitive, emotional - it had everything that you would want in a hockey game I thought.
"It sucks that it didn't go our way, but this thing's far from over."
A regulation win against Finland would see Canada advance to the Final regardless of a Sweden victory to the head-to-head tiebreak the Canadians hold over them from their 4-3 overtime result on Thursday in the tournament opener.
