Few lines did very well and Canada lost one of their best defenseman early in the game, but Sidney Crosby and Connor McDavid help their team to a 4-3 OT victory against Sweden in the opening game of the Four Nations tournament.
Crosby finished with three assists which is including the setup for
Mark Stone's crucial third-period goal.
But while Crosby carried Canada with his leadership, McDavid showed the electrifying skills that makes him the most dominant player in the world right now.
McDavid was in "cheat mode" all night and turned the game into a personal highlight reel since he assisted on Canada's first goal with a ridiculous passing sequence including McDavid to Crosby to MacKinnon which is a goal hockey fans have long dreamed of seeing in international play.
His speed forced Sweden to back off and it opened space for his teammates.
He nearly set up
Devon Toews for an open-net goal in the third and won 12 of 14 faceoffs which is an underrated part of his game.
Even when he wasn't scoring, his presence was creating chaos for Sweden's defense.
Despite the win, Canada has areas to clean up since losing
Shea Theodore early exposed defensive weaknesses, and
Jordan Binnington was inconsistent by allowing a soft goal but also making key OT saves.
This game reinforced Canada's reliance on its superstars and Sidney Crosby remains the heart and soul, but McDavid is the engine driving them forward.
If he continues at this level, Canada will be tough to beat in the tournament and could win it all against the other nations.
