Evander Kane will be investigated amidst LTIR concerns
Recently, the Edmonton Oilers announced that Evander Kane underwent successful knee surgery. With that being said, his projected timelines for a return to the ice is reported to be around 4-8 weeks, sparking doubts of a regular season comeback.
While Evander Kane's recovery is good news, his situation has major implications for GM Stan Bowman leading up to the deadline. Now, sources indicate that Evander Kane may be investigated to ensure the Oilers are remaining compliant with the NHL's LTIR policies.
According to Liam McCormick of Oilers Daily, The NHL does conduct independent check-ins on players to make sure teams aren't prolonging injuries for cap reasons, so they will check in on Evander Kane after his knee surgery.
According to Frank Seravalli, Evander Kane will not be healthy to return until the post season.
Kane has a legitimate serious injury that should be safe from an NHL investigation, even though he could be on track to return for game one of the playoffs.
»«It gives the Oilers additional support to make any medical claim that they might need to do on the LTIR if anyone, including the league, were to challenge this.
And so moving forward, I would consider the Oilers operating on just one track and one track only, which would mean Kane isn't coming back until the playoffs.»
- Frank Seravalli
To prevent teams from abusing LTIR cap space, the NHL announced just last year that they would be conducting 3rd party investigations to all players suffering from serious injuries.
»We have an independent, third-party physician review their medical records in detail, and in-person examinations where necessary.»
- Bill Daly
It should be interesting to see how the situation unfolds, including Stan Bowman's plans deadline plans with his increased budget.
