Kris Knoblauch offers insight on healthy scratching Jeff Skinner
Well folks, that was rough weekend of hockey to say the least. The Edmonton Oilers suffered two back-to-back losses to the LA Kings and the Anaheim Ducks, and Kris Knoblauch made the last minute decision to healthy scratch forward Jeff Skinner heading into today's matinee.
As previously stated, Kris Knoblauch made the executive decision to send Jeff Skinner to the press box today, rewarding Derek Ryan with a well deserved activation to the starting roster.
Following the Oilers 5-3 defeats to the Ducks, head coach Kris Knoblauch made himself available for his usual post game interviews, explaining his decision to healthy scratch Jeff Skinner.
Kris Knoblauch explains healthy scratching Jeff Skinner
»Derek's been playing really well for us before christmas. We trust him in a lot of situations. We had a lead late in the game and he's on the ice. That's kind of the role he has, and we trust him. He comes out, even after playing well, and we don't want him out of the lineup too long. Somebody had to come out, and I think a lot of the guys have been playing well.»
- Coach Knoblauch
According to Liam McCormick of Oilers Daily, It's telling that Knoblauch stresses a lot of the players are playing well, because it once again indicates that he believes Skinner is not playing to an NHL standard.
Jeff Skinner has only scored 6 goals and 12 points in 35 games this year, a far cry from the initial expectations this offseason that he could score near 40 goals.
He currently holds a one year $3,000,000 deal but contains a full no movement clause. Bowman along with Oilers management will need to work to convince him to move his salary by taking on retention and willing to move is no movement clause.
Personally, its tough to say wether or not Skinnerwould be interested moving, but waiving his NMC and embracing a change of scenery could help spark his offensive groove
