Meet the Edmonton Oilers newest MVP
The Edmonton Oilers are coming off a strong 4-2 victory against the St. Louis Blues, and the post game hard hat went to an unlikely candidate.
Oilers fans, meet Erik Elenz.
According to Liam McCormick of
Oilers Daily, Elenz was quietly hired by the Oilers in July of 2024, replacing former coach Mike Fanelli.
The Oilers have a player of the game award of the hardhat and championship belt, lightly representing the team's best defensive and offensive performers respectively. Erik Elenz was given the defensive award.
Although the reasoning behind Erik Elenz's player award isn't entirely clear, it's evident that the Edmonton Oilers new video coach is having a significant impact on the team behind the scenes.
The Edmonton Oilers made a sneaky hire over the offseason, poaching Erik Elenz from the Seattle Kraken farm system.
Clearly, Elenz is some sort of "money ball" analytics guru, and the Edmonton Oilers seized the opportunity to hire one of the new up and comers in the industry.
Although fans were confused when the photograph surfaced on social media, it's really amazing to see the Edmonton Oilers include a guy like Elenz in such a big moment.
I imagine it's one of those pictures Erik Elenz will hang on his wall for a very long time.
For fans who have a bit more curiosity on Erik Elenz, the Oilers said that there'll be a more in-depth explanation of Elenz receiving the award coming soon on Oilers+.
