The Toronto Maple Leafs are calling out the Oilers for stealing their post game tradition
Well, it seems the Edmonton Oilers have irked Toronto Maple Leafs enthusiasts with their new post game tradition.
Post game awards are a common theme in the NHL. After every win, most teams will recognize two players. One for overall outstanding performance (player of the game), and another one for exceptional defensive play.
In Edmonton's case, the player of the game award is a WWE themed gold belt, and the defensive award is a hard hard -- a tribute to Alberta's oil rig workers.
According to Maple Leafs Daily, their fans haven't taken too kindly to the Oilers usage of the belt, stating they came up with the idea first, and they look better doing it.
Personally, I don't care much for the post game awards. Although it's a fun way to recognize outstanding performances, it's rather corny -- and the pictures are awkward.
I doubt Oilers fans were aware of the Leafs post-game traditions -- and honestly, who cares?
To be fair, no one likes getting their ideas stolen, but surely Leafs fans can think of other things to complain about.
Last season, the Oilers gave out the painter and the plumber award after wins to acknowledge a player for their offensive effort and defensive efforts respectively. It was a really unique ritual and really popular among fans, but the Oilers decided to shake things up for the new season.
-Liam McCormick, Oilers Daily
While Leafs Nation is up in arms over the Oilers "stealing" their post game rituals, they might want to focus on getting past the first round of the playoffs instead.
