Team Canada is coming off an epic 3-2 overtime victory over Team USA last night at the 4 Nations Face-Off final, and Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid got his first taste of winning at the NHL level. That said, Connor McDavid was part of a decorated Team Canada roster, filled with proven Stanley Cup Champions. While Connor McDavid has yet to add a cup to his resume, tournament MVP Nathan MacKinnon admits that Connor McDavid is till the best player on the planet.
According to the NHL, Oilers captain Connor McDavid buried the game-winning goal for Team Canada at 11:42 of overtime on Thursday night at TD Garden to defeat Team USA with a 3-2 victory and cap off a fantastic end to-end battle between hockey's fiercest rivals in the final of the 4 Nations Face-Off.
Following the victory, Nathan MacKinnon made himself available for his usual media availability, delivering a huge message for teammate Connor McDavid.
Nathan MacKinnon calls Connor McDavid the best player in the world.
"Connor's the best player in our game," said MacKinnon, who knows a little bit about both winning and following in the footsteps of Sidney Crosby. "For him to put it in like that in such an intense atmosphere and a hostile environment for Canadians was special, and hopefully he can do that again next year."
McDavid is certainly hoping the same. He brushed off the comparison to his childhood idol, looking ahead to the 2026 Olympics in Milan.
"Well, he's doing it in the Olympics, and this is just, you know, kind of a little tournament," McDavid said of Crosby's golden goal. "So we want to do it again next February. That's what it comes down to. Obviously this was great, exciting, but the focus is next February and doing it in Italy."
While Team Canada has their eyes set on the Winter Olympics, Connor McDavid will shift his focus on getting the Edmonton Oilers back in the win column tomorrow night against the Philadelphia Flyer.
