The possible replacement for Shea Theodore for Team Canada has been named
Team Canada suffered a significant hit in their Four Nations Face-Off opening game against Sweden as defenseman Shea Theodore left the game with an injury and will not return.
According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, Theodore is out for the rest of the tournament which is forcing Canada to adjust the roster.
Friedman explained during the second intermission that rosters for this tournament were locked before play began which means Canada cannot call up a replacement.
However, if another defenseman suffer an injury, Canada can have one or two "on notice" to join the team when the series shifts to Boston.
"Canada will be allowed to put a defenceman or two «on notice,» so if there's another injury (hope not), one will be able to join when the series switches to Boston. Since these players may be away on vacation, proper notice is necessary."
- Elliotte Friedman
These players would need advance notice as they may be away from competition.
For now, Team Canada will have to rely on its reserve defensemen which is Flyers blueliner
Travis Sanheim who is expected to step into a bigger role.
Many fans had speculated that Edmonton Oilers defenseman
Evan Bouchard could be added to the team, but the tournament's roster rules prevent this type of change.
This tournament previews what Canada's Olympic roster could look like for the 2026 Winter Games in Milan, Italy.
The Four Nations tournament continues through February 20, with the final game set to take place in Boston, MA.
